The Yucaipa High football team dropped its nonleague opener, 21-9 on Friday, Aug. 19, to host Palm Springs. It was Palm Springs’ first season-opening victory in eight years.

Yucaipa defeated Palm Springs 34-28 last season and won its first six games before falling to eventual Citrus Belt League champion Cajon.

Yucaipa trailed 7-3 when running back Zach Alonso caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Albert Suarez with one minute left in the first half to go up 9-7. Palm Springs took the lead for good with four minutes left in the third quarter on Justin Murray’s 4-yard scoring run.

Javyn Capler added a 2-point conversion and Palm Springs led 15-9.

Palm Springs then eased away when Capler completed a 26-yard TD pass to Damien King with two minutes left in the game.

Yucaipa had 155 yards of offense – 82 rushing and 73 passing. Suarez completed 5 of 18 passes with one touchdown.

Elijah Smith caught two passes for 27 yards and Rudy Castillo two passes for 38 yards.

Timothy Tilosky led Yucaipa with nine tackles. Jace Pistilli, Nick Juarez, and Aiden Englert all had eight tackles and Juarez made a sack.

Tyler Noah and Will McHargue had six tackles apiece.

Dawit Crain kicked Yucaipa’s field goal.

Yucaipa hits the road at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26, when it meets Silverado in Victorville.
