Area athletes compete

Numerous area track and field athletes competed in the Arcadia Invitational. Cajon competed in the open boys 800 relay and finished in eighth place in 1:32.03. Redlands’ Julien Scarborough finished in sixth place in the rising star’s boys long jump with a leap of 21-4 ½. Cajon’s Talia Washington took fifth in the open girls’ 100 in 12.07. Redlands East Valley’s Corey Ford took 24th in the open boys 800 in 1:58.37. Redlands’ Kathryn Thompson took seventh in the open girls triple jump 36-11. Yucaipa placed 12th in the open girls 1,600 relay in 4:05.40. Cajon took seventh in the seeded boys 400-meter relay in 42.93. Cajon’s Seth Johnson took fourth in the boys invitational 110 hurdles in 14.19.

Yucaipa sweeps Blackhawks Yucaipa swept Citrus Valley in a track and field meet. The Thunderbird boys won 96-31 and the T-Bird girls won 87-40. The Yucaipa girls moved to 3-0. Freshman Mikensi Smith of YHS won the 100 meters in 12.59, edging Citrus Valley’s Lindsay Chau (12.80). Chau reversed the finish in the 200 meters, winning in 25.62 to Smith’s 25.88. Smith also ran a leg on the YHS 400-meter relay team that won in 50.43 and won the long jump with a leap of 16-5. Teammates Audrey Blankenship and Riley Napolitan tied for first place in the shot put with equal heaves of 29-4. Blankenship also won the discus at 105-11. Taylor Becker won the 1,600 meters in 5:20.28, edging CV’s Gabriella Romero who finished in 5:20.63. Yucaipa won the 1,600 relay in 4:15.75. The Blackhawks surprised the T-Birds in the 800 and 3200 meter runs as Isabella Bravo won the 800 in 2:23.89 and Itzel Del Rio took the 3200 in 10:28.0. Gabriella Romero finished a close second in the 1600 in 5:21.63. The Blackhawks are now 2-1 in the CBL. On the boys’ side, the T-Birds dominated the field events. Malachi Thompson won the triple jump at 39-8, just ahead of teammate Alijah Hoover, second at 39 feet, 0 inches. Thompson took second in the long jump at 20-3, just behind teammate Everett Head (20-4). Hoover won the high jump at 6-0. Ben Ligenfelter captured both the shot put and the discus. Ligenfelter’s best effort in the shot put was 43-10 ½. He led the competitors in the discus at 123-5. Jose Linares won the 1600 meters in 4:39.71. Nick Schmidt won the 800 meters in 2:04.73. Joseph Zelaya led a Yucaipa sweep in the 200 meters at 24.62. Everett Head won the 100 meters in 11.37. Gustavo Mariscal doubled in the 400 meters (53.33) and the 300 hurdles (42.68). Yucaipa boys are now 2-1 in CBL meets. For the Citrus Valley boys, Arian Ornelas won the 3200 meters in 10:28.01. Citrus Valley won the 1,600 relay in 3:42.70 Football star Brock Lium finished second in the 100 meters in 11.59.

Aquinas rolls

The Aquinas High baseball team defeated Muir of Pasadena 15-4. Eric Bitonti led the Falcons with two hits and two runs batted in. Jordan Murillo had two hits and one RBI. Kaden Willerford, Chase Davidson, Nathan Christman, Seth Rajacich, Cesar Fernandez, Josh Torres all had two hits for Aquinas. Cody Kiemele pitched four innings for Aquinas and gave up no runs and two hits while striking out three and walking one.

Eagles fall

The Arrowhead Christian Academy baseball team lost to Woodcrest Christian of Riverside, 1-0. Gama Martinez and Ethin Bingaman each had one hit for ACA. Bradley Gilbert excelled on the mound for ACA, allowing three hits and one run while striking out 11 and walking one. Scherrer leads Yucaipa The Yucaipa High baseball team won two of three games in the National High School Invitation in Cary, North Carolina. The first victory was 6-4 against Regis Jesuit of Aurora, Colorado. Wes Hickey and Luke Scherrer each had two hits and Owen Egan, Jacob Reimer, Daniel Arambula, Chase Antillon, Gavin Egan, and Isaiah Walz had one hit each. The Thunderbirds also defeated Hanover of Mechanicsville, Florida 13-4 and lost to Stoneman Douglas of Parkland, Florida 12-1. Yucaipa catcher Scherrer was named to the all-tournament team. Scherrer had five hits in nine at-bats and hit .555 with four runs batted in.

The University of Redlands baseball team defeated Lewis and Clark 13-3. Jonah Advincula and Jake Burgess had three hits each and Mark Kirkland, Jared Anderson and Max Clark had two hits each.

T-Birds win

The Yucaipa High softball team defeated Citrus Valley 4-2. Emily Gonzalez and Makenna Pettey led Yucaipa with two hits each. J Haynes and K Sullivan had three hits each for Citrus Valley. Aquinas bops Eagles The Aquinas High softball team defeated Arrowhead Christian, 11-1. Leilani Bustamante and Jaeya Butler had three hits each to lead Aquinas. Malaya Bliss and Karyme Amaya had two hits each. Zoe Herford earned the win while giving up two hits and one run in 3 1/3 innings. Rylee Dirks had two hits for ACA. Citrus Valley wins The Citrus Valley softball team defeated Redlands East Valley 5-0. Savannah Barajas and Amanda Waymire had one hit each for REV. Kailey Sullivan went 4-for-4 for Citrus Valley and Gabby Pena had two hits. Malie Noda pitched a two-hitter.
