My name is Jaime Alvarez; I am a resident of Yucaipa. I am writing this letter in support of the 0.5 percent municipal sales tax that we will vote on March 3, 2020.

It is imperative that the citizens of Yucaipa vote “YES” on measure E and avoid cutbacks in Yucaipa’s existing paramedic program which would increase response times on 911 calls. It is truly a matter of life and death.

My personal experience is a testimonial as to how important approving this measure really is.

On Saturday, June 27, 2015 while enjoying a pleasant conversation with my wife Eunice and daughter Elena, I suffered Sudden Death Cardiac Arrest. The electrical system in my heart stopped and I was clinically dead for approximately 40 minutes. Over 700,000 people suffer Sudden Cardiac Arrest in our Country annually and only 7% survive. When SCA strikes you have 3 minutes before permanent damage occurs. Fortunately my daughter was able to commence chest compression that kept lifesaving blood and oxygen flowing to my brain and organs until the paramedics arrived.

When EMT’s arrived they immediately brought out their equipment and defibrillated me and I flat lined. Thank God, CAL FIRE Yucaipa arrived Brandon Walton a Yucaipa a Yucaipa Fire Fighter Paramedic along with Travis Paye, Fire Captain. Walton Brandon jumped in and initiated 10 which means he drilled a hole into my ankle and established a line to administer Epinephrine directly into the marrow of my bone. At his point they were able to have a return of spontaneous circulation.

To me Yucaipa Fire fighters and Paramedics are real heroes that helped save my life that fateful morning of June 27, 2015.

My family will gladly and gratefully vote “YES” on the new “Sales Tax Ordinance” An increase of .5 percent or one half cent on every dollar of taxable sales goods in the city of Yucaipa is inexpensive when it comes to saving lives.

Please vote “YES” on March 3. The life that is saved could be yours or one of your loved ones.

Jaime Alvarez
