Several weeks ago, Michelle Lopez in her “Michelle’s Meanderings” column, she featured “community service.” She mentioned all of the opportunities that Yucaipa/ Calimesa residents have available to become involved.

That weekend, the Uptown Gardeners happened to meet and volunteer their time and talents again!

We hope that everyone has noticed the freshly replanted hanging baskets in the Uptown. What you may not know is that for the last nine years, a dedicated group of volunteers have been meeting together, spending four to eight hours, to re-burlap, add fresh plants to almost 200 baskets, twice a year.

This year, 27 of us met at Five Winds Ranch to complete the task and I want to express publicly our appreciation to all of our volunteers.

Maybe you will be surprised to know that we are your neighbors, friends, Jazzercize buddies, retired city employees, Wine Women and Wisdom Sisters, current city employees, people who are golden-hearted and others who believe in enhancing the Uptown streetscape, for all the citizens of Yucaipa and visitors to enjoy.

Come out and join us at our “Golden Trowel” award winner Terri Frenken and volunteer to be part of our city’s heritage at the next replanting time this fall and make a difference in our community.
