Waiting for the fireworks, in my comfy lawn chair facing Crafton Hills, I looked at my flag flapping in the breeze and I remembered a poem that I read in college that I didn’t understand.

I’d been asking myself why Alberto Martinez Ramirez was carrying his baby Angie Valeria, across a continent.

They were found, father still holding daughter, just short of their goal, drowned in the Rio Grande.

I reread Langston Hughes poem “Let America be America Again.” Now I understand.
