Lance Corey Hallberg, 62, passed away in the early morning hours on Oct. 16, 2019, with his wife, Linda, lovingly at his side, after a lifelong battle with diabetes. He spent the last few weeks of his life surrounded by loving family and friends, keeping constant vigil and prayer at his bedside. There were a lot of stories and laughter shared also.
Lance was born to parents Darrel Quinten and Patricia Hallberg on July 18, 1957.
His love for the Lord began as a child at Faith Lutheran Church where four generations of his family have worshiped. That love continued to grow as an adult when he attended the Packing House and Wildwood Calvary Chapel. His life was dedicated to serving his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on a daily basis.
Lance was a true champion of every sport he participated in. While attending Yucaipa High School, he excelled at football and baseball and received many athletic awards. He graduated from YHS in 1975. Lance was inducted into the Yucaipa Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010.
After playing baseball at San Bernardino Valley College for two years, Lance was drafted in the first round by the Minnesota Twins baseball organization where he played for several years. He was part of the “Lumber club” which was an honor given to the home run hitters in the league.
Lance continued his love of baseball by coaching at Mesa Grande Academy, La Sierra University and University of Redlands. Over the years he was coach and mentor to many local youth baseball players, many whom have gone on to play Major League Baseball.
Lance loved camping, fishing and especially going to the beach. A lot of his happiest times were spent sitting by the ocean, smoking a cigar and watching the waves and people. He also enjoyed swap meets where he always found “bargains and treasures.”
Lance was loved by many and will be carried in their hearts forever. May he rest in peace, pain free, throwing that baseball and running wherever he wants on Jesus’s “Field of Dreams.”
Lance was preceded in death by his amazing father, Darrel (Bub) Quinten Hallberg, paternal grandparents Ben and Rose Hallberg and maternal grandparents Harold and Estelle Erickson.
Lance is survived by his loving wife, Linda, his gracious mother Patricia, his big brother Garry (Bonnie), his devoted sister Laurie (Fred), his wonderful children Seth (Katie) and Leah, aka peanut (Nick) and grandchildren Seth, Corey, Logan, Samantha, Matthew, Corbyn, Katelyn and Carsyn, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Nov. 2, at 10 a.m. at Wildwood Calvary Chapel in Yucaipa. A luncheon will follow at Mill Creek Cattle Co. in Mentone from noon to 3 p.m.
