James Ernie Johnson died of dementia on Jan. 15, 2021, while under the care of his daughter and son-in-law.
He was born on Sept. 16, 1940, in Fairhope, Ala.
He came to California after the Navy, serving on the USS Yorktown. Ernie met the love of his life, Patricia, and the couple moved to Yucaipa in 1969 and raised two children.
He worked civil service at Norton AFB in audio-visual until it closed in 1988 than worked at March AFB until his retirement. Ernie was a cowboy, loved to trail ride, rope, raising and training horses and a few mules that he rode and took on packing trips in the sierras. He enjoyed camping with the family and friends but most enjoyed his property.
He is survived by his wife Patricia 52yrs. Son James (Jimmy) Johnson and his wife Brandi, Granddaughters Hannah and Hailey of Colorado springs. Daughter DeAnna Van Leer and her husband Ron, Granddaughter Jenna of Kansas, Jadyn, Jayah, Ronny of Yucaipa. Brother George Johnson of Daphne Alabama, Sister Alice Fay Straum of Fairhope Alabama, nieces and nephews.
He was a proud member of the San Bernardino Co. Sheriff Rangers for 47 years A member of the San Bernardino horseman for 46 years. He was a gentleman, wonderful husband, father and Papa and will be missed so much.
He was laid to rest at Desert Lawn Memorial park next to his father-in-law on Jan. 26, 2021.
