In a letter from Yucaipa-Calimesa Joint Unified School District dated May 1, 2020, the school district announced it is unable to create a plan for a physical graduation for this academic year. Instead of a traditional graduation ceremony, the district will provide a virtual graduation with live streaming and "meaningful moments, including graduation traditions."

Below is the letter from Cali Binks, YCJUSD Superintendent.

Making a decision regarding graduation for the Class of 2020 is one of the hardest decisions to make. The emails and phone calls have been read and heard as a district, and we have held out hope that we would be able to plan for a physical graduation. The district has participated in local department of health meetings as late as yesterday. Unfortunately, to no avail, there has not been a change to the orders for mass gatherings, nor any indication that this will occur in the next several months. Knowing some graduates have immediate plans after school, such as military deployment, college out of state/country and life plans have been a consideration with those who recommend a postponement.

It is hard to convey the heartfelt disappointment we share with our seniors and families. Graduation is a time of joy and celebration, and Yucaipa takes great pride in celebrating our students. In making a decision, with no current change to the current order, we are unable to create a plan for a physical graduation at this time. We will strive for excellence in providing a virtual graduation with live streaming and meaningful moments, including graduation traditions. We know this is not the graduation anyone planned, nevertheless, the writing and filming must begin in order to provide a quality production.

Staff members are working to put together a great presentation, which will include many of our graduation traditions. Most importantly, graduates will still have an opportunity to walk across the stage in their caps and gowns to receive their diploma. This will take place over a 7-hour period to reduce the number of graduates on campus at any given time. The footage will then be edited and included in our virtual ceremony, which will be broadcasted on June 3, 2020, at 7 p.m.  Additionally, we will live stream celebrations of our graduates at home using a social media link provided prior to the ceremony.

Additional information and directions will be sent out prior to each of these dates.

Here are some important dates for ALL Graduates:

All YCJUSD Graduates

Wednesday and Thursday, May 20 and May 21, 2020

(dates and time to be assigned)

Graduation Stage Walk: (Graduates Only)

Graduates will walk across the stage and accept their diplomas from their principals with appropriate safety measures. We are hopeful there will be new orders in place by the week of May 18th providing guidance that changes the health order we are under. We all desire an order that will positively affect the graduation experience by allowing an increase in  the number of people allowed to gather.
