Beloved TV icon, Betty White, died Dec. 31, just three weeks shy of her 100th birthday. White’s deep love and devotion to animals, and to animal shelters, prompted a movement. Fans began #BettyWhiteChallenge, encouraging $5 donations to local animal shelters on Jan. 17, which would have been White’s 100th birthday. The hashtag went viral and it even reached Yucaipa. Several locals began posting #Bettywhitechallenge donation requests to Yucaipa Animal Placement Society, a no-kill animal shelter in Yucaipa. YAPS Executive Director Annette Florez said she loves the idea. “We did receive a donation on Jan. 2, in honor of Betty White and it prompted us to do this.” YAPS plans to open an outdoor area for donors on Monday, Jan. 17, even though YAPS is usually closed on Monday. The outdoor area will feature a photo area for social media posts and will feature a few furry friends. “We are back to normal operating hours - Wednesday through Saturday, from noon to 4 p.m.,” said Florez. Donors can go online to YAPS.org and click on the donate button. YAPS is located at 11937 13th St., Yucaipa. Call 1-909-790-1440 for more information.
