On Friday, Sept. 11, 2020, at about 12:46 a.m., deputies from the Yucaipa Police Department responded to the report of shots fired at a residence in the 13300 block of Roberts Road. The reporting party stated they had seen the suspect, later identified as Douglas Kircher, 36, of Yucaipa, with a shotgun and heard him fire a shot from outside the home. They believed he was outside near a shed or an RV. Patrol deputies and a Sheriff’s Helicopter, 40King1, responded to an area near the location. Additional shots were heard coming from the location. Deputies used the Public Announcement System from the helicopter and patrol units in efforts to get the suspect to peacefully surrender. The suspect ignored their commands and fired his weapon at the helicopter. Deputies from the Specialized Enforcement Division (SED) responded to the location and, while positioning an armored vehicle in front of the residence, the suspect exited the home armed with a knife. Deputies gave commands for him to drop the knife, he complied and was taken into custody. Kircher was transported and booked into the West Valley Detention Center for Attempted Murder and Felon in Possession of a Firearm. Deputies located a rifle inside the residence.
During the incident, 40King1 left the location to refuel. Deputies inspected the helicopter and found it had been struck by gunfire fired from the suspect. No deputies were injured during the incident.
