Yucaipa High Girls Wrestling Team members head to CIF

Yucaipa High School girls wrestling team came in third as a team and had three girls take the championship in their weight class at the Citrus Belt League Championship. Pictured from left are Sitlaly Sanchez, Taren Fite and Mariah Cortez.

The Yucaipa girls wrestling team has been putting in many practicing hours and hard work and it is paying off. The team currently consists of nine girls.

Recently participating in the Citrus Belt League, the girls finished third with three girls receiving championship titles.

Taren Fite (the school’s only varsity wrestler) is 106 lbs., her stats are 19-5 and she is a Citrus Belt League champion. Carissa Rodriguez is 111 lbs. and her stats are 8-14. Sitlaly Sanchez is 126 lbs. and her stats are 22-3 and she is a Citrus Belt League champion. Abigail Haskell is 131 lbs. and her stats are 15-10. Chayenne Obo-Of is 137 lbs. and her states are 5-11. Mariah Cortez is 189 lbs. and her stats are 13-9 and she is a Citrus Belt League champion. Three girls on the team are currently out with an injury; they are Danni Symons, Vanessa Espinoza and Emma Raya.

The girls wrestling team practices five days a week for a minimum of two hours a day. They practice right along side the boys team.

Next for the team will be the first rounds of CIF at Hillcrest High School in Riverside this Saturday, Feb. 3.

The top eight placers in each weight class from all Southern Section Eastern Division schools will continue on to the next round of CIF on Feb. 10.
