A group of incoming Yucaipa High School freshmen meet up on campus for the first time.

Secondary students returned to local school campuses this week for the first time in more than a year.

On Wednesday, April 14, middle and high school students came back for some in-person learning in the afternoon. The hybrid schedule divided sixth- through 12th-grade students into two groups, with Group A on campus from 12:35 to 3 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, and Group B with the same schedule on Wednesday and Friday.

Families had the choice to move to the hybrid schedule or remain in distance learning for the remainder of the school year, which ends June 9.

Among the health and safety protocols the Yucaipa-Calimesa Joint Unified School District has implemented are temperature checks as students arrive on campus, physical distancing of six feet in classrooms and wearing face coverings.

The district has also installed filtration systems in its HVAC units and placed air purifiers in every classroom. To further help with ventilation, doors and windows will be kept open when possible.

The return of secondary students to local campuses comes about a week after elementary students began some in-person instruction at their school sites.
