Yucaipa Brush Engine Push-In Ceremony is open to the public and will be held Monday, Aug. 12, at 4:30 p.m. at the Crafton Hills Fire Station, 32664 Yucaipa Blvd.
The fire service is always seeking modern ways to perform our profession more efficiently; with that they are also in a profession that is very steeped in tradition.
“We seek to honor the personnel and methods performed before us dating as far back as the fire vigiles of ancient Rome,” said Yucaipa Fire Chief Grant Malinowski. “ One such tradition is the ‘push-in’ of a new fire apparatus.
The origins of this tradition came from the time of horse drawn fire engines and “reverse” was not an option. After steam engines had replaced the horse drawn equipment and to honor the push-in tradition, the fire department invited the community, civic leaders, and mutual aid companies to push their new fire engine into the station.
“This tradition is to bring that fire engine good luck during its tenure protecting the community,” said Malonowski. “With that I cordially invite the community to ‘push-in’ brush engine 552 to the Crafton Hills Fire Station as we place it in-service on Monday, Aug. 12.”
