Senior fun at Yucaipa’s Scherer Community Center

Friends from Green Valley Village Apartments enjoy time together.

The Yucaipa Scherer Community Center was the place to be for a patriotic themed party on Thursday, July 11. The Celebrate America party featured live music by the band Endless Era. Guests were treated to a fried chicken dinner and a couple interactive raffles and games. Seniors in attendance wasted no time, scooting along on the dance floor and showing off some great dancing skills.

Each month, the senior center hosts a monthly party that includes dinner and/or refreshments. The cost ranges from $2.50 to $5 per person.

Senior Kathy Nichols is a two-year resident of Yucaipa and resides at Green Valley Village Apartments.

“I’m a regular here at the center and I think it’s a wonderful opportunity to meet people and visit with old and new friends,” she said with a smile. “I think more of the people of Yucaipa should come out. It should be overflowing here because this is wonderful.”

Seniors should plan to dig out the Hawaiian apparel, because the next senior party will be an exciting luau on Aug. 13. The luau fun will start at 2 p.m.

In addition to monthly parties, the Scherer Community Center holds several events, KEY (Knowledge and Education for Yucaipa seniors) seminars and safety courses designed specifically for seniors.

“We offer KEY seminars about topics related to our seniors every Tuesday,” said Kathy Adams, community services coordinator.

Future KEY seminars at the center include: Senior Companion program, July 30; Omnibus Travel Training, Aug. 6; Rolling Start program, Aug. 13 and Oh my Aching Bones on Aug. 20.

AARP is having its annual Driver Safety Course on July 24-25 from noon to 5 p.m. There is no charge for the two-day safety course.

In addition to great events, the Senior Cafe offers a warm lunch, Monday through Friday, for a suggested donation price of $3. Lunch is served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Lunch typically includes an entre, vegetables, a salad or fruit and milk. Full menus are available at the center.

The center asks that you reserve your meal a day in advance by calling 918-4306.

Adams said they are currently seeking volunteers in the kitchen. Call the center for more information.

The Scherer Community Center is located at 12202 First St. in Yucaipa. For more information about classes, the nutrition program or events, call 797-1177.
