On Monday, March 9, at approximately 3:37 p.m., deputies responded to an unknown problem in the area of Beech Street and California Street in the city of Yucaipa. The reporting party frantically reported a male was at the location and he had killed her cat.
Upon arrival, deputies found Michael Herden, 37, of Yucaipa, who appeared intoxicated, at the home. He was taken into custody without incident. Investigating deputies found numerous scratches on Herden’s arms and found the deceased cat at the home.
The investigation revealed Herden, a former boyfriend of the reporting party had sent threatening text messages to the female, who was not home, threatening to kill her animals. When the owner returned home, she found Herden inside her home and the cat dead.
County Animal Control took possession of the cat and a necropsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
Herden was arrested for felony animal cruelty, and an outstanding warrant for public intoxication, and booked into West Valley Detention Center.
