A minor mix-up has turned into a big plus for fans of the free Concerts on the Green summer series at Calimesa County Club.

Charles Hurt, president of the Calimesa Cultural and Performing Arts Association, which has funded and organized the event for its 17 years with the help of the city, recently announced an eighth concert has been added to this summer’s program. It had previously been announced there would be seven concerts, beginning Thursday, July 12.

Hurt explained at a recent Calimesa City Council meeting that there had been a mix-up about the bands that had committed to perform. Bob Allen, event coordinator for the group, unexpectedly passed away in early March. Because of the suddenness of Allen’s illness, not all of the concert information was passed on to the other members.

“We had no records,” Hurt said, “only what he had told us about bands he had planned to contact.”

The board rallied together, however.

“We came together and there was only one of the scheduled concerts that we had to change and actually that became a good thing,” Hurt said, “because we hired a new group called the Buddy Holly Review.”

Hurt and the other members thought this year’s summer program was complete. A few weeks later, however, Hurt was contacted by a band that said it had been booked by Allen for an early August concert date. With another band already signed for that date, Hurt said the cultural and performing arts association came up with another alternative.

“We sent an email and said that we would have an eighth concert on Aug. 30 to accommodate them if that would be agreeable, and they said it would,” he said. “So we are going to have eight concerts this year. They are all really, really good bands.”

That’s welcome news to those who like to relax with family and friends under the mature trees of the Calimesa County Club. All of the concerts are from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays. The lineup for this year’s summer concert series is:

July 12, The Connie Roener Band; July 19, The Buddy Holly Review; July 26, Born Country; Aug. 2, Hodads; Aug. 9, Skyline Xpress; Aug. 16, Hollywood Hillbillies; Aug. 23, Doo Wah Riders; and Aug. 30, The Working Poets.

Calimesa County Club is located at 1300 Third St. in Calimesa.
