At the beginning of last week the old Pizza Chalet was still standing. On Thursday, Aug. 25, the demolition of the building began. Big 5 Sporting Goods will be coming soon, next to Big Lots. Many residents in the community are happy that the city is finally occupying the location and adding another big name retailer in Yucaipa. With all of the trails, lakes, baseball fields and open land Yucaipa has to offer, residents will no longer have to purchase their outdoor equipment and clothing from nearby cities. “Big 5 is a great fit, we’ve been convincing them to come to our city for quite some time now. We have a lot of outdoor activities in Yucaipa and our city lacked a local sporting goods store,” said Director of Community Development, Paul Toomey. “The outside of the building will get an entire facelift, it’ll resemble the look of uptown and city hall,” said Toomey. The current contractor is installing air-conditioning, wiring and turning the two existing structures into one functioning 10,000 sq ft store. The current contractor plans to be finished with part one in October. After the current contractor finishes part one, Big 5 will bring in their own contractor to turn the building into a complete store. Big 5 Sporting Goods is anticipating their grand opening during the holidays.
